The Stately Homes of Yorkshire

When we think of Yorkshire most of us will picture rolling hills, wild Mooreland and of course puddings, yet one thing we tend to overlook is Yorkshires many historic houses. The area is positively brimming with houses that allow us a special glimpse into old England. So the next time you are staying in your Scarborough hotel make sure you add a few historic houses to your long list of Yorkshire attractions.

Sewerby Hall and Gardens in Bridlington occupy an amazing cliff top position and houses a wide range of art and craft displays, an orangey as well as boasting an award winning garden.

Beningborough Hall located near York contains some of the finest Baroque interiors in the country as well as wonderful gardens.

Castle Howard near York is an amazing realisation of the baroque visions by John Vanbrugh. The house contains paintings by Gainsborough and Rubens and the gardens were one of the very first to be landscaped in Britain.

Harewood House near Leeds is an award winning home featuring a number of fantastic events and exhibitions throughout the year. The house contains beautiful interiors by Robert Adam, Chippendale furniture, fine porcelain and art including Italian Renaissance masterpieces and Turner watercolours. Outside there is a great Bird Garden and wonderful views.

Ripley Castle near Harrogate has been the home of the Ingilby family for over 700 years. Sir Thomas Ingilby was out hunting with the King when a wild boar charged him, heroically Thomas killed the boar and saved the Kings life. King Edward III was so grateful that he knighted Thomas and granted him a family crest featuring a boars head.
