Somerset is a county full of things to do. The coast is one of the most popular areas for holiday makers, as it combines the sheltered seas of the Bristol channel with lovely, South Western sunshine and charm. Beaches along the coast are perfect for whatever you want to do, from swimming through to sun bathing through to sandcastle building, so you can be assured that no matter what the people you’re travelling are interested in, there’s plenty of scope for everybody to enjoy great family holidays in Somerset.
If you ever grow tired of the beaches (and who could honestly grow tired of the sun, the sea, the surf and the sand which the beaches of Somerset possess in abundance?) then there are plenty of things for you to do inland as well. The wonderful cities of Wells and bath each have incredible architecture in them. Bath is famous for its Roman baths, but elsewhere in the city the gorgeous stone buildings and streets are truly beautiful, and walking around the city, seeing the sights, relaxing in the parks and viewing some of the ancient buildings will last you a day, if not a whole weekend! And that’s without even visiting the Roman baths!
Wells is remarkable for architecture of a different sort. The mediaeval buildings there are still studied today for the architectural prowess displayed in their making, but the most spectacular of all the buildings is the world famous cathedral. Its front is covered in intricate and complex statues and images, meaning that anybody can sit in front of it for hours studying it and still be finding new details and wonders hidden amongst the carvings there.
The rest of the county, outside the famous cities and the coasts still has a lot to offer, with famous places like the Somerset Levels and Glastonbury Tor. These are easily worth a day trip, and wandering around them can really give you a healthy respect for how vast the outdoors can be. Even away from these popular landmarks, the countryside of Somerset is beautiful and worth exploring. The South West is known for its beautiful countryside, and Somerset does not disappoint on that front. Public footpaths, cycle routes and bridleways will all allow holiday makers to stroll or ride through the beautiful patchworks of fields and wooded areas, taking everything in at their own leisure.
Truly, Somerset holidays have something for everyone.
