Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and the countries major city. The city lies along the Tejo (Tagus) river, right where it completes its journey to the Atlantic Ocean. Also known as the City of the Seven Hills, Lisbon’s beauty is unparalleled, with old neighborhoods, new modern areas, the river and the Ocean co-existing peacefully.
As a tourist just arrived in Lisbon you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to go around the city, using a mix of subway, bus and the shrinking but always picturesque tram lines. The “electric car” as they call it now only runs through selected touristy areas of the town, but it’s a delight to be in. But if you’re a driving person, you’ll be happy to know that car hire prices in Lisbon are moderate, and rent-a-car services are very common.
Lisbon’s history is intertwined with Fado music and several typical restaurants where you can eat typical Portuguese food and enjoy amateurs and acclaimed professionals singing the Fado. A journey across the old parts of the city will take you through many historical landmarks, including the Belem area where in old days the ships arrived from the Indies, and where you can enjoy Lisbon’s most beloved pastry – the Belem cake. Just remember to ask for a sprinkle of cinnamon on top!
